The Golden Rule: Buy Less Than You Think
Newborns grow shockingly fast. Most babies outgrow 0–3 month clothing in 6–8 weeks. Before you fill the drawer, plan for a 6–8 week rotation rather than a 6-month stockpile.
The Essential Newborn Clothing List (India)
Rompers & Onesies — 6 to 8 pieces
Short-sleeve cotton rompers are the workhorse of the newborn wardrobe. They're easy to put on, easy to change, and work as a complete outfit. Choose styles with envelope necks or front snaps — no pulling over the head for a floppy newborn. For Indian summers, go with 100 % cotton or muslin. For winters in North India, layer over a thermal vest.
Sleepsuits / Footed Rompers — 3 to 4 pieces
One-piece sleepsuits with feet keep the baby warm at night without loose blankets. Ensure the zip or snap opening runs all the way to the feet for night-time nappy changes in the dark.
Vests / Inner Bodysuits — 4 to 6 pieces
Snap-crotch vests are the under-layer for cooler months. In peak Indian summers, some babies wear these alone indoors.
Mittens — 2 pairs
Newborns scratch themselves. Soft cotton mittens are essential for the first 4 weeks.
Socks — 3 to 4 pairs
Lose-able but necessary. Stock up.
What to Skip (For Now)
- Jeans and structured trousers — uncomfortable for babies who spend most time lying down.
- Shoes — newborns don't walk. Soft booties come later.
- Anything with buttons on the back — a nightmare for nappy changes.
- Large wardrobe for 0–1 month — many gifted babies are born larger than expected.
Season-Wise Adjustments (India)
| Season | Core Romper Type | Key Addition |
|---|---|---|
| Summer (Mar–Jun) | Sleeveless / half-sleeve cotton | Muslin swaddle wraps |
| Monsoon (Jul–Sep) | Half-sleeve cotton, quick-dry | Extra change-of-clothes set |
| Winter (Oct–Feb) | Full-sleeve + footed sleepsuit | Fleece or knit outer layer |
How Many Rompers Should I Buy?
Plan for 2–3 outfit changes per day with a wash cycle every 2 days. That means 5–7 rompers in active rotation. Buying more than 10 in one size is usually wasteful.
